Being a member of the UGSAS is more than just about flying. You will be a member of an exclusive and rewarding organisation that can provide opportunities for you to really excel and enjoy yourself in other areas!

Sports

Sport, Fitness, Teamwork & Fun are important in the RAF. UGSAS has it's own Football Team (Separate Men & Women's teams) Rugby team, Hockey team, Rowing Team and Shooting Team. These really come into their own when you travel to 'do battle' with other UAS teams from around the country. However if sport isn't your cup of tea there is a wealth of other opportunities.

Adventurous Training

UAS membership allows you to participate in all forms of Adventurous Training available to Service personnel. This can be in the form of an expedition or on a Joint Service Training Scheme. However the main aim is to increase your fitness, confidence & leadership abilities. These may include, sub aqua diving, hang gliding, canoeing. sailing, and paragliding to name but a few. If that wasn't good enough you can even get paid to go.

Expeditions

Each year students in the squadron help organise one or more expeditions. In recent years we have gone on ski expeditions to places including Colorado
(U.S.A.), Les Arcs (France), Sweden and Norway. Our summer expeds have included travelling as far as Peru and also the Pyrenees in France.
Tanzania and Kenya, and in 2006 we went to the Teton National Park in the USA. 2008 saw the winter expedition travel to helmsedal.

The cost is minimal, but the experience is priceless!

Flying

Squadron membership also opens doors to trips in other RAF Aircraft. This may be a
trip in a Nimrod, Sea King, or even a Hawk or a Tornado! Each year you also get the
opportunity to detach yourself to other RAF bases to see behind the scenes of a
real multi-engine, helicopter, or fast-jet Squadron. Current students have recieved
flights in Tornado F3, Hawk, Tucano, Chinook, Hercules, Nimrod, Sentry and Puma to name but a few.

Social

Don't think for a minute that being in the squadron is all work and no play. It also has a very lively social side as well. There are many events organised throughout the year such as the Christmas Draw, Annual Dinner, Burns supper, Barbecue, Go-Karting, Shooting, Squadron Olympics etc. . . You'll also be pleased to hear about the Student-Friendly drink prices at the squadron bar!
